WHY EASTER?
The Essence of Easter: More Than a Celebration
Every year, the season arrives with its familiar colours, gatherings, and festivities. Yet for many, Easter passes as a cultural moment rather than a spiritual awakening. This writing is for the person who has caught in the euphoria of Easter celebration without truly grasping its eternal weight, its power, and its personal demand upon your life.
Jesus is not simply the theme of Easter. He is the very reason it exists at all.
Life Before the Cross
Before Christ laid down His life for us, humanity had existence but not true life. There was breathing, but no freedom. There was living, but no liberation. The Apostle Paul captured this condition with startling clarity: "And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience" (Ephesians 2:1-2). The life mankind carried was not abundant life. It was life dictated by darkness, sin, the flesh, and the devil. There was no power to truly choose differently, because the enemy was not merely at the gate; he was enthroned in the hearts of men.
Jesus did not come simply to improve that condition. He came to completely overturn it. He came to redeem, to purchase back what had been surrendered, and to restore dominion to those who would receive Him.
If you are reading this and have never personally acknowledged Jesus as the Son of God, never confessed that He died for your sins and rose from the dead on the third day, then the celebration of Easter holds no experiential power for you yet. You may enjoy the season, but you have not yet entered the freedom it announces.
The Scripture is unambiguous on this: "And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty" (1 Corinthians 15:14). Everything about Easter hinges on the resurrection. It is not a myth. It is not a metaphor. It is the central historical and spiritual fact upon which the Christian life stands or falls. A risen Christ means death has been conquered. It means the grave holds no final authority. It means the enemy's dominion over your life has been legally and spiritually broken.
So Why Easter?
I have just two reasons that changes everything.
First, Easter is a reminder that you now have direct access to God the Father. When Jesus breathed His last on the cross, the thick veil of the temple in Jerusalem was torn in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51). That veil was not decorative. It was a barrier, separating sinful humanity from the holy presence of God. Its tearing was God's own declaration that the way is now open. The writer of Hebrews confirms this: "Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh" (Hebrews 10:19-20). You no longer have to approach God with fear, guilt, or a sense that you are unwelcome. Easter says: draw near.
Second, Easter is a reminder that victory over death and hell is not a future hope alone; it is a present reality. Jesus descended, confronted the powers of darkness on their own ground, and emerged triumphant. Revelation 1:18 records His own words: "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death." He holds the keys. Not Satan. Not sickness. Not failure. Not your past. Jesus stripped the enemy of his authority, made an open spectacle of him, and triumphed over him through the cross (Colossians 2:15).
What This Means for Your Life Today
Because of Easter, nothing in your life should remain in the condition of death without a fight of faith. Your health, your finances, your relationships, your marriage, your family, these are not areas where the enemy gets to have the final word. Jesus did not simply die for your soul and leave the rest of your life to ruin. John 10:10 records His own declaration: "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."
That word abundantly is not modest. It means overflowing, surplus, pressed down and running over. It is the life Easter purchased.
As long as you believe in Jesus and stand in the finished work of the cross, the enemy has already lost his case over your life. The verdict was rendered two thousand years ago on a hill called Calvary, confirmed three days later in an empty tomb, and declared before all of heaven and earth.
Easter is not a holiday. It is a courtroom verdict in your favour. Walk in it! And as you do, hear the words of the One who made it all possible:
"I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26).
Come to Him Today
If you have read this far and something is stirring in your heart, that is not coincidence. That is the Holy Spirit drawing you. Today, Easter or any other day, can be the day everything changes for you.
If you have never given your life to Jesus Christ, or if you walked away and need to find your way back, pray this prayer out loud right now and mean it from the depth of your heart:
"Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and that God raised You from the dead. I confess that I have lived apart from You and I am sorry. Today I open my heart and I receive You as my Lord and my Saviour. Wash me clean by Your blood. Fill me with Your Spirit. I am Yours from this day forward. In Jesus name, Amen."
If you just prayed that prayer sincerely, welcome to the family of God. You are no longer under the dominion of darkness. You have passed from death into life (John 5:24). Heaven is celebrating over you right now (Luke 15:7).
Do not keep this to yourself. Tell someone. Find a Bible believing, Holy Spirit filled church and plant yourself there. Your new life has just begun.
